Dog-Friendly Campervan Hire Holidays

Dog-friendly campervan hire is now available! For most people, the family dog is a beloved member of the household and is greatly missed when the family goes on holiday. Lots of people would prefer to take their dog with them on vacation and don’t like the idea of leaving them with relatives or in a kennel.

Most campervan rental companies in Australia, New Zealand and the USA do not permit dogs inside their camper vans and motorhomes (except for trained guide dogs) but we do work with a number of companies who permit dogs for an additional fee. Strict conditions do apply. Smaller dog breeds are preferred because there is not a huge amount of room for dogs inside the campervans, so to be fair to all travellers, it is best to leave your Great Dane at home.

2/3 Berth smaller campervans are not recommended when travelling with your pet because they really aren’t big enough to accommodate 2 adults, luggage and a dog. We recommend travelling in a larger campervan such as a 4 Berth or 6 Berth vehicle with shower and toilet. Dogs should be safely secured in the vehicle with an approved dog harness or animal carrier. In the event of an accident, you want to ensure that your best mate is not injured. It is best to keep your dog out of direct sunlight if possible and make sure the vehicle is well-ventilated and cool so that your dog is not stressed while on the road.

You are also responsible for any damage that the dog causes to the interior and exterior of the campervan. You are expected to keep the campervan neat and tidy (e.g. clean up any excess dog hair) while on rent with your pet. The rental company do a thorough clean at the end of the hire but you will be charged for any excessive cleaning bills.

It is a good idea to pack the following items for your dog: their vaccination card, registration papers, collar, lead, food, water bowl, toys, bedding and shovel, poop-scoop or a plastic bag to collect their droppings.

Your dog will appreciate their own creature-comforts from home. Also try to keep their feeding times and sleeping habits the same as home. A health check-up at the vet prior to travel is worthwhile too – you don’t want to have to organise a vet visit while on holiday.

The other important item to organise is your overnight accommodation at pet-friendly caravan parks. Even though you have onboard shower and toilet facilities, we recommend that you stay in caravan parks for safety and comfort. Please note that dogs are strictly not permitted in national parks, state recreation areas, nature reserves, historic sites or Aboriginal areas for a number of reasons.

So you need to find a caravan park that welcomes dogs. Despite what you may have heard, there are quite a number of caravan parks in Australia and New Zealand that allow dogs by arrangement. But always check ahead of time to ensure that the park’s dog policy has not changed.
